Xemex Concept One Chronograph watches- It feels like it has been a while since we have seen something totally new from Xemex. The last few years saw increasingly up-market timepieces from Xemex as the Swiss watch market kept getting stronger. We all know what happened recently and this new Concept One Chronograph watch is going to be quite reasonably priced. It does beg the question if Xemex¡¯s Ruedi Kulling decided somewhere in the design process that an up-market watch would not have as much market appeal these days, and decides to place a quartz movement inside instead of a mechanical movement. Who knows, but it is a good speculation.
Casio & Surfrider Foundation To Release G-Shock X Surfrider watches- The Casio G-Shock classic series is really the perfect surfer watch (unless you want the tide charts which are available on other Casio watches). This is because they are inexpensive, can take a beating, and often solar powered, and highly water resistant. Likely realizing this, Casio and the Surfrider Foundation teamed up and will release the Casio G-Shock X Surfrider watch in July 2009. The watch is model G5500SRF-1 and will feature special colors and a Surfrider Foundation logo on the face behind the data. A portion the money for each watch sold will go to the Surfrider Foundation. Interestingly enough the partnership is stressing the eco-friendliness of the watch because it is solar powered and does not need batteries. This is true, but a kinda salesy if you ask me. I would prefer to see a testimonial by a surfer saying, "I can thrash the watch around all I want and not worry about it, and at the same time I never need to replace the battery that makes it the most reliable piece of gear I own." Wearing a watch while surfing is actually very important. You don't want to get caught out in the dark, and you need to judge the daily tidal ranges that are all time based. You should also remember that you have a life on shore. For $130 retail (out in July) it isn't a big commitment, and the connection with the Surfrider Foundation gives it that special added bonus that should make it on your list of surf prep for the summer (unless you are one of those pyscho surfers in industrial wetsuits wading near the razor sharp rocks at the mouth of the San Francisco Bay - then you've been surfing all winter haven't you? Nevermind, the Summers in San Francisco are pretty cold too).
Tiret Gotham Watches- Wow, these are pretty wild I have to say. From the odd and rare Tiret New York watch company comes the Gotham collection of watches. Here are the Chronograph and Power reserve models, and I hear there is a GMT version as well. Based on Batman's version of New York, the Gotham is a mixture of square modernism, art deco, and sheer horological goodness. I would wear the thing for sheer novelty value.
These are not brand new watches, nor are they cheap watches. Lots of white gold (or other golds) and other fine materials (steel, ceramic, natural rubber, optional oodles of precious gems) make up the Gotham watches, and probably a lot of prissy attitudes and luxury margins. But who cares, you'll probably never even see ones of these watches in the flesh. The only places I am aware they are sold is in places like Dubai and Burjuman. Where cost is of little issue to some people. The name of the brand is Tired New York - not sure what the connection to New York is - oh well.
