Nautica NMX 400 watches With Five Movements- This is a big and bold watch if I have ever seen one. Part of me likes the watch, part of me is a bit freaked out by it. The 58mm wide monster from Nautica is certainly inspired by brands like Ikepod and N.O.A. Nautica's result is the brand new Nautica NMX 400 you see before you (which looks nothing at all like the NMX 300). As part of the Timex Group, Nautica has been releasing some quite nice (and reasonably priced) watches as of late. Plus, they can enjoy wide distribution, so this watch won't just be a nice picture , you can actually get one in at a retail location. Still NMX 400 is the oddest of the 2009 watches from Nautica, though it might prove to be surprisingly useful in the right hands.
Seiko Astron: World's First Quartz Watch Turns 40- When I was recently in Japan, the Seiko folk made sure we knew all about the Seiko Quartz Astron (ref. 35SQ) watch. For whatever reason, the knowledge that Seiko was the inventor of the world's first quartz movement powered watch has eluded me (until then that is). Coincidentally, this December 2009 is the 40th anniversary of the Seiko Astron quartz watch. I got to check out one of the original Seiko Astron watches. Two of the images here are mine that I took of an Astron watch back in Japan. The watch itself is a testament to Seiko having help up so well after 40 years. It looked as though it was made no more than 5 years ago. The retro style of the watch is surprisingly durable as the look of the watch seems to meld well with today's popular vintage looks. The 18k gold case itself is tonneau in shape with that distressed-like metal textured look that used to be popular. Then you have a smoothly polished dial and a clean functional face. At the time, the design was pretty new for Seiko who had been essentially making the same style watch case for a decade. This was back in 1969.
Glycine Combat 6 Watches On The Cheap

Looking for a good deal these days on a new watch? Want something classic and Swiss? Want it to have a decent movement but don't want to pay too much? Well then Glycine might have just what you are looking for with the new watch Combat 6 watches - that come in two styles with a choice of automatic or manually wound movement. First is the Glycine Combat 6 Automatic, with a more subtle face in black or blue, classic Arabic numeral face, and the optional metal bracelet. There is also the more military style Glycine Combat 6 Manual watch with most of the same options, but just with a manually wound movement. I believe both movements are available in all the styles.
The watches are each in steel and 43mm wide. Larger than the vintage style they are modeled after. You can totally see some high-level military guys wearing one of these watches circa 1950 is "the war room." Looking at their watch and wondering what time it is in Moscow. "Do those commie bastards even sleep?!" Yes, yes they do.

For years Glycine has been making admirable pilot watches and a few nice diver's. The sink in the recent economy has hurt sales for all, and these lower prices watches are part of the answer. Design is really no frills. The watch dials are a breeze to read which is nice. The watch is only water resistant to 50 meters, which seems a bit low. What I really don't understand is why Glycine chose to use mineral crystals on the front and rear of the watches. Why no sapphire? Is it really that much more expensive. I guess so.
The Glycine Combat 6 Automatic has an ETA 2824-2 movement which is reliable and easy to live with. The Manual version has an ETA 2801-2. Each movement is Swiss and acceptable. I like the style of the metal bracelet. Looks like a jubilee style bracelet for the most part, and the back leather strap with contrast stitching is no joke either. Also, look at the dial and notice the seconds hands, they actually look like needles or pushpins, right? Retail price for the watch will be between $635 and $760 - less as a street price of course.
